Data infringement in Instagram: Mumbai company leaks private social media influencers data

Chtrbox from Mumbai, allegedly responsible for data leakage from millions of users, said that a limited number of influencers were unintentionally exposed, but that did not contain sensitive personal information.

The company cited the reports of private data that were leaked as inaccurate and acknowledged that a certain for limited influencers was inadvertently exposed for about 72 hours.

An Instagram said the company is investigating whether a third party has improperly stored Instagram data, in violation of our policies. In its statement, Chtrbox claimed that no personal data was obtained through unethical means by the company. The site is in the news for online display of personal data, including contact details of online social media influencers.

The data was found without a password on the AWS server (Amazon Web Services). The data from nearly five crores Instagram influencers with celebrities, influencers and brands have been traced to a company in Mumbai, called Chtrbox, a marketing agency for social media influencer.

This database did not contain sensitive personal data and only provided information that was available in the public domain or that influencers reported itself. We are investigating the issue to know whether the information described, including e-mail and telephone numbers, originates from Instagram or other sources.

Meanwhile, if you are not an Instagram influencer, you don’t have to worry because the data breach occurred via Chtrbox and not on Instagram servers. Nevertheless, according to the Instagram policy, the collection of information from the Instagram accounts – public or private – is contrary to the administration of the social media site.
